VTAC 1-5 Rifle Drill

The 1-5 drill is designed to both reinforce and expand upon the lessons of the 2x2x2 drill. Like the 2x2x2 drill, we use the 1-5 drill to focus shooters on driving the gun to the center of the target on each shot and shooting as fast as the sights can be aligned. The 1-5 drill also introduces the idea of shooting until the threat is eliminated. Despite what we might see in the movies, two rounds won't immediately bring an opponent down. It may very well take 3, 4, or 5. Bottom line: you shoot a target until it is...

VTAC 2x2x2 Rifle Drill

The 2x2x2 drill is quick and simple. My intent with this drill is to drive home the idea that time between individual shots should be the same regardless of whether the shooter is following up his initial shot on a single target or transitioning to another target. We pull the trigger when we have the sights where we want them and that remains true for the second shot on one target or the first shot on the next.

VTAC Half & Half Rifle Drill

Mike Pannone and I designed the 1/2 and 1/2 drill to reinforce some of the principals that we both think are key to tactical carbine shooting. Work on getting the gun quickly up on target; drive the gun to the center of the target on the follow-up shots; SQUEEZE the trigger on every shot; shoot as fast as you can accurately place rounds on target; and keep your weight on the balls of your feet, support hand forward on the rifle in order to properly control recoil.

VTAC Highsmith Rifle Drill

The Highsmith Rifle Drill is designed to push shooters' limits on strong side to support side transitions with the rifle, proper barricade kneeling techniques, and lateral movement while firing - from both the strong and support side. This one is a personal favorite of mine. Transitions between strong and support side take quite a bit of practice - as does accurately (and comfortably) firing from the support side. Considering the alternative (exposing half of your body to hostile fire), I'd consider practice on this one to be time well spent.

VTAC Rifle El Prez Drill

The El Prez has been shot with pistol for years. Here, we simply replace the pistol with the rifle. Conducted from 10 yards, the drill requires 12x rounds (6 in each mag) and 3x targets (I typically use IPSC targets). A Pro Timer is obviously a big help here as well. We concentrate on quickly getting the gun on target, acquiring a good sight picture for every shot (which means continually driving the gun back to the center of the target), and executing a quick, fluid slide lock reload. This is a great "next step up" from the 2x2x2 drill.

VTAC Street Fighter

The VTAC Street Fighter Course is an Advanced Tactical Shooting Course. It can be conducted with the carbine, pistol or a mix of both weapons. This course will cover advanced fighting techniques for winning a gunfight in an urban environment. The primary focus of instruction will involve working in and around vehicles while fighting to a more secure area. Prerequisites for this course are Carbine 1.5. This course is physically demanding.

VTAC Zig Zag Rifle Drill

The Zig Zag drill is another favorite of mine. It's designed to really push the envelope on what I'd call CQB-style shooting. Shooters work on moving forward, moving laterally (both from the left and from the right), and rapidly engaging a target after taking a sharp corner. The layout of the cones also pushes shooters to concentrate on taking in the whole picture rather than focusing simply on the targets.

Viking Tactics Triple Threat Rifle Drill

The Triple Threat is designed to really dial in on CQB-type shooting. It requires a great mix of both speed and accuracy. I recommend starting this one at about 5 yards. If you're routinely making all of your shots on this one, it's time to speed up!
